MyWebSearch Suggests Research Tools for Kids

MyWebSearchNot too long ago, when today’s parents were kids, school assignments, reports and research papers were done by looking up information in books. Encyclopedias were a great source of all kinds of information, and for more detailed info there were shelves full of books on just about any subject. With the help of the friendly librarian, good reading skills, paper and pen in hand, a school report could be completed.

Today there’s a whole new world of obtaining information and writing it up for school. MyWebSearch has found a really great resource for kids to help them get the information they need, whether it’s for school, or just for fun. Calling itself the “Scholarly Internet Research Collection” INFOMINE lets kids look up resources in a whole host of categories.  The list of categories includes Bio, Ag and Medical Sciences, Cultural Diversity, Government Info and lots more.

So the next time your child comes home with an assignment on any aspect of history, science, the arts or pretty much anything else, MyWebSearch suggests that you head straight for INFOMINE and start your research right.

Part II: MyWebSearch:Tips for Kid Searches

Now that MyWebSearch has laid down the rules for safe and productive web searches, we can turn to the actual tips for more fun, fast, and efficient web searching.

1.    If you remember that a search engine is just a computer doing what it is told, you will realize that you have to tell it exactly what you are looking for.

2.    Be sure to put phrases that you are looking for inside quotes Use words and phrases that are descriptive.. Words outside of quotes tell the search engine to look for each word separately.

3.    Little connector words like ‘a’, ‘it’, and ‘the’ are not relevant to search engines. So if they are not important you can leave them out, and if they are important, like they are part of a name of a song or movie, then use quotes.

Search Tip Rules for Kids from MyWebSearch

MyWebSearch knows that kids love the internet. There is nothing that cant be found, if the person surfing knows how to look for it. This power combined with the natural curiosity every child is born with can make a computer a wonderful learning tool, if used the right way, to avoid frustration and other problems.  But before we get to the search tips, MyWaySearch wants to lay down some rules to keep kids safe:

1.    Parents need to first give their permission before children begin to surf on the internet.
2.    Parents also need to agree with the subject matter that their children want to search for.
3.    Children should never be allowed to blog, chat or post any personal information about themselves or their families.
4.    Any page that makes a child uncomfortable on the internet, with pictures or other inappropriate content should be closed immediately and the parent informed.

Keep Your Children Safe with CIPA and MyWebSearch

Did you know that there is a federal law passed by Congress which addresses the issues and concerns we all have about inappropriate and offensive content which is so prevalent on the internet? MyWaySearch has found that the Children’s Internet protection Act, or CIPA, imposes several restrictions on schools and libraries that get funding from the E-rate program to help pay for their internet connections.

MyWebSearch discovered that the E-rate program helps to allow schools and libraries to afford their internet connections, but only if they utilize technology protection measures which filter or block access to pictures which are any of the following: obscene; pornographic or harmful in any way to minors.

There are more restrictions imposed by CIPA which all help to keep our children safe when using the internet at school or in libraries, as MyWebSearch has found.

MyWebSearch: Themed Birthday Parties

The internet is a wonderful tool that can help you pique your children’s interest in topics they wouldn’t have thought of on their own. Here at MyWebSearch we offer great ideas you can use to bring your family closer together by means of the internet. For example, next time you have to plan a birthday party, go online to get some great ideas for themes and projects. Why not have a country-themed party, where the children come in costumes of native countries, while you serve national foods like rice, pizza, taccos and more. Have the children participate in games that are common in other countries, or in an art project or dance of similar origin. If your child is interested in science, perhaps search the web for creative science projects and ideas which you can use at the party. For example, the partiers can make a life-like volcano, or maybe even a whirlpool!
